The medtech company going global with patient-specific implants for precise surgical procedures

Surgery is an invasive and complex medical intervention by its very nature.

Most often, medical professionals aim to limit the number of surgical procedures a patient needs due to the stress going under general anesthetic places on the body. Further, medics aim to reduce the amount of time patients need to spend on the operating table to decrease the risk of complications and save time and resources.

Yet the delicate nature of many procedures means that reducing the surgical burden isn’t straightforward.

Maxillofacial and orthopedic surgeries are two areas that demand extreme precision. The procedures involving the face and jaw require a deep understanding of both dental and medical anatomy. These also often involve intricate bone manipulation in a highly visible area of the face, and can necessitate delicate procedures near vital nerves and blood vessels.

This often means that procedures have multiple invasive stages. A patient undergoing mandibular reconstructive surgery spends over two hours on the operating table just to have their jaw measurements taken and a titanium plate custom-fit – all while under anesthesia.

Meanwhile, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 450,000 total hip replacements are performed in the US each year. The common orthopedic procedure can have a massive impact on quality of life, helping patients to maintain mobility in their later years. Related video: High-Precision Techniques for Making Prosthetic Eyes (Amazing Experts)

However, everyone has unique bone anatomy. Patient-specific orthopedic devices can help to improve post-operative outcomes but conventional manufacturing processes don’t support custom implants.

MedTech startup OsseoLabs is one of the companies on a mission to transform maxillofacial and orthopedic surgical outcomes with AI-powered solutions and 3D printing technology.

Custom implants that improve surgical outcomes

OsseoLabs is the result of a shared vision between Dr. Vikram Ahuja, a seasoned business economist and successful entrepreneur with two exits under his belt, and Dr. Patcharapit “Joe” Promoppatum, a mechanical engineering expert from Carnegie Mellon.

Together, they have set out to redefine maxillofacial and orthopedic surgeries to reduce unnecessary time on the operating table – therefore reducing costs and improving patient outcomes.

OsseoLabs’ AI-powered process leverages 3D printing and biomechanics to create implants that are tailor-made for each patient prior to surgery, ultimately enhancing efficiency, reducing complications and cutting costs for the healthcare system.

The medtech company uses a patented technology called TPMS (Tailored Porous Medical Solutions) to design personalized, biocompatible implants with unmatched precision.

These implants optimize osseointegration, slashing rejection rates and eliminating the need for follow-up surgeries.

In particular, they are distinguished by their customized internal porous design features, including shape, size, thickness, and a proprietary porous structure, with the enterprise’s implants ensuring better patient outcomes.

Bringing tailored porous medical solutions to patients worldwide

OsseoLabs has over 40 hospital partnerships across multiple markets, supporting over 170 surgical procedures to date.

By leveraging TPMS, surgeons saw a 50% reduction in surgery time, saving thousands of dollars in surgeries and a reduced complication rate compared to traditional surgeries.

The global 3D-printed personalized implant market is projected to hit $4.2 billion by 2027, with North America driving 78% of the demand.

With a growing presence in the medical field, OsseoLabs is currently navigating FDA approval and pursuing Series A funding to further expand its impact and improve outcomes in more maxillofacial and orthopedic surgeries.
